Women in Ads

I have noticed, even before this class, how women are portrayed in ads as almost naked or very sexualized, especially in perfume ads. It is ridiculous how almost every women is either naked or almost naked in every perfume add I see. As we discussed in class, I have also wondered why these ads appear in women magazines. I have never seen the viewpoint that they place those ads there to tell women that's what you need to look like. That's ridiculous! I do not want to see pictures of naked women and that is not going to make me want to buy any brand of perfume. Trust me, I am not about to go out and buy Mariah Carrey's new perfume because I'm sick of seeing her naked butt sticking up out of the water in her perfume ad. Advertisers need to find a different way to sell their perfumes to women because showing us what we will never look like is not the way to do it!

Do women have to be perfect?

We talked in class last week about how it seems women must be perfect. They must be skinny enough and tan enough and wear the right make up and clothes and everything else. Well, I was listening to Good Morning Texas the other day while getting ready and they were previewing fall fashions. One of the spokeswomen was describing a bracelet one of the models had on and she made the comment that this bracelet "looks great on any wrist." So now women need to have the right wrists? What if my wrist isnt skinny enough? Haha. I wander how far this 'perfect image' of a woman will go because I had no idea our wrists were supposed to look perfect to and if they don't then there might be some bracelets that I cant wear.

Model Minorities

We discussed model minorities in class on Friday, and the discussion gave me a new look on several types of minorities, especially Asians. Asians do tend to be viewed as smart but I never looked at them as a 'model minority.' I don't think this is a fair label for any minority, because I'm sure it causes problems for them for other minorities, and it is not fair to other minorities because they already feel pushed aside by caucasians, and now by Asians because supposedly they have made it in America. I'm sure there is some truth to this, though, because if not then the term would not have come around. Perhaps Asians do tend to be smarter, and they do tend to run their own businesses and do well for themselves, but so do many other minorities.
